single mothers
Poems By: Gary Clark

Its a lonely life for a single mum

An empty purse when the shoppings done

Beans and toast every night for tea

Staple diet of a one parent family

With debts piling up

And her disco nights long gone

But still

Her baby

Sleeps soundly on

And shes beautiful and clean

Pity the fathers nowhere to be seen

A pile of brown envelopes

Stacked behind the clock

Final reminders

And threats of being cut off

Its a struggle keeping

Body and soul together

A young girl alone

At the end of her tether

She feels all the sneers

And concending glares

Life can be lonely

When nobody cares

So look beyond your bigoted views

And preconceived ideas

Shes a young girl

 Brringing up a baby

All alone

She'll be doing it for years and years

No one questions where the father has gone

No responsibility taken

No fatherley duty done

A self-centred man

Leaving it all

To his daughters mum.

...
